New fracking chemical disclosures published in FracFocus between June 11, 2024 and July 18, 2024.
Highlights
- Companies published disclosures representing 1,326 fracking jobs in 14 states.
- Companies reported using more than 27 billion gallons of water, including over 140 disclosures each reporting over 30 million gallons. Four Occidental Oil & Gas, LLC, disclosures each reported over 700 million gallons, probably in error.
- Companies used more than 4,900 trade secret designations. More than 60 disclosures hid the identity of more than half of the chemicals with these designations.
- Almost 7,000 records reported chemicals on our list of “Chemicals of Concern.” These include individual records of over
- 1.7 million pounds of hydrochloric acid,
- 800,000 pounds of ethylene glycol, and
- 600,000 pounds methanol.

This report of new fracking chemical disclosures summarizes the fracking jobs published recently at FracFocus, the industry-sponsored chemical disclosure instrument. It includes the Who, What and Where of recent fracking activity: the operating companies, the chemicals they use (including quantities), and where these jobs are located.

The nature of the fracking chemical data is complicated and can be difficult to make sense of; Open-FF aims to make it those data more digestible. In addition, FracFocus disclosures are plagued by inconsistencies, ambiguous and missing values and many obvious data errors; Open-FF flags and filters many of those problems. Our hope is that these regular reports (and the broader Open-FF project) will give readers both big-picture perspectives of industry activities as well as enough detail to dig deeply into specifics such as individual chemicals, fracking job, or company.
